There is no such thing as a stupid questions……well, almost. But as far as we are concerned, it is better you know all the details about working at camp before the season starts.

Below are a bunch of frequently asked questions by prospective camp staff plus a few more that people are probably afraid to ask! If you’ve got a question that isn’t here just give us a call and we’d be happy to answer it for you. We don’t bite, honest.

Is there wifi at camp?

No! We operate a tech free camp and this goes for staff as well as campers. The camp directors will be the only ones with phones but this is for logistical and emergency use only. Use camp as an opportunity to get off grid, remove yourself from social media and to just enjoy the company of those around you. By all means, bring your ipod if you like to listen to music in your free time, but bring your guitar as well!

What should I pack for camp?

Less than an articulated lorry, more than a daypack. You’ll get a full packing list at staff training.

Will I get paid enough?

Given how hard you will work, probably not. But, you will leave camp with a healthy paycheque having not spent a bean all season, a full heart and a lifetime of memories.

Will I get time off?

Yes (a little). On change-over days, once jobs have been done, there will be 24hrs to relax and catch up on sleep. at times during each session you will be given time off, however expect to be working flat out most of the time. It’s full on but fun!

How many hours will I be expected to work in a day?

Far too many but fortunately the camp director is human (at least in the beginning) and tries very hard to give you break periods each day.

Will I get dirty?

Hopefully! Especially if you are having fun and doing your job. If you bring old clothes, lots of soap and make the most of the showers then you will minimise the damage. If you aren’t dirty occasionally we may wonder what you are doing.

Can I bring my dog?

Afraid not, even if you have the sweetest dog in the world. Archie, the camp dog, runs a tight ship and doesn’t like sharing the attention.

What is your alcohol policy?

It’s pretty simple; camp is not the place for drinking and is therefore not allowed. You can probably already guess what happens if you are caught drinking at camp. And yes, it's a long walk to the nearest bus stop. Camp is for the children and while we want you to have a great time the campers fun comes before ours.

Do you have a dress code?

Yes. Camp Crusoe T-shirts are worn when away from camp and on opening and closing days. Other than that, shorts and t-shirts are fine (when the british weather allows).

Stay as clean as you can, shave if you are beardless, keep it neatly trimmed if you are not and don’t start one while you are here. Suggestive t-shirts are out, as are dirty sock-less feet. Wear shoes appropriate to the activity. Please no skimpy tank tops, bizarre haircuts or tattoos that can’t be easily covered.

If this seems hard-nosed, remember we are looking after children and we do not want them returning home wanting lip piercings and back tattoos. The Camp Director has relaxed slightly since his days in the Foot Guards, but not that much!

Will I make friends?

Without a shadow of a doubt!
